Neon Indian Plays Last Show As “Denton Locals”
Neon Indian | Should Have Taken Acid With You | 1.30.10 Hailey’s Denton, Texas from nx35 on Vimeo.
A cloudy, over-capacity Hailey’s Saturday was the launchpad from which Neon Indian would bounce to New York. It was a festive reunion before Alan Palomo announced the band’s final departure from Denton, as the 21-year-old proved his puppet master skills to the town where he first cut his chops at the knobs: the band’s unsuspecting subjects responded with abandon, exploding into a pulsing mess of twisting limbs in a storm of synth and Palomo’s cooing.
Palomo has famously claimed Austin or Brooklyn as the band’s home base, so it was a tender moment — albeit a confusing turn — for him to acknowledge the group’s roots.
“We’re Neon Indian and this is our last show in Denton as, I guess, Denton locals,” Palomo declared near the end of the set. “We’re moving to New York literally tonight. We want to thank you guys for spending the last show with us – it really means a lot.”
And then, introducing the song posted above:
“The one thing I’ve always loved about Denton is, how easy it is to find acid.”
Maybe it’s not so easy anymore. Two of our clean-pocketed comrades reported having been asked for mind-bending substances during the show. But no matter — the Denton Palomo remembers lived on, swaying and jumping and sweaty, left under his own brain-melting influence.
The next time Neon Indian plays in Denton, it will be at the NX35 Music Conferette. We’ll update you with schedule specs soon.
